Sleep Paralysis | My Story

At the time of my surgery I had a terrifying question " I suffer from sleep paralysis. I have never had anaesthesia before and I was wondering if sleep paralysis sufferers are more likely to be victims of anaesthesia awareness.
Should I notify my anesthesiologist about my disorder? "

What I found out was : " Sedation is not general aneasthesia. Sedation will put you in a deep sleep state and you will be simultaneously given pain killers for pain relief.

General anesthesia would involve paralysing your respiratory muscles and putting in a tube in your wind pipe for artificial ventilation. Dont worry, discuss all this in detail with your anesthesiologist and surgeon. All your doubts should be cleared so that you are not very anxious prior to the procedure. Goodluck."

What Is Sleep Paralysis?

Sleep paralysis is a phenomenon in which an individual, either during falling asleep (hypnagogia) or awakening (hypnopompia), temporarily experiences an inability to move, speak, or react.

It is a transitional state between wakefulness and sleep, characterized by muscle atonia (muscle weakness). It is often accompanied by unusually powerful and terrifying hallucinations to which one is unable to react due to paralysis, and physical experiences (such as strong current running through the upper body). These hallucinations often involve a person or supernatural creature suffocating or terrifying the individual, accompanied by a feeling of pressure on one's chest and difficulty breathing. Another common hallucination type involves intruders (human or supernatural) entering one's room or lurking outside one's window, accompanied by a feeling of dread. [Wiki]

What Is Anesthetic Awareness?

Under general anesthesia, a patient is given medications intended to cause unconsciousness and relieve pain. If the medication to render the patient unconscious fails, awareness occurs. In other words, the patient wakes up, becomes aware of certain events occurring during the surgery, and may recall some or all of the events. Further, if the medication to relieve pain fails or is inadequate, the patient may feel pain while awake.

Finally, cases involving general anesthesia often require the patient to be given medication intended to prevent movement. In very rare instances, the sleep and pain medications fail while the paralytic agent does not, making it virtually impossible for the patient to communicate this dire situation to the anesthesia providers.

My Story with Sleep Paralysis

I used to have this problem when I was in my early teenage and as much as I remember it was somewhere near class sixth or seventh. At some nights I used to wake up just after 10 mins of sleep and find my self motionless and till the time I got the control back on me, I would be badly breathing, puzzled and haunted.

But, this time it was different! I was returning back to my home town by road from Faizabad and was sleeping next to the driver seat with seatbelts on. Suddenly, I woke up and I was in the worst state of paralysis only my right leg could move about an inch. As the window of car was open, dust from the road was directly going in my mouth and I was still unable to close my own mouth. But, the brain was active and decided to hit my left leg with right and some how after struggling for over more than 15 minutes I slowly got the control back on my body. I will like shouting Wake Up, Wake Up to all my body parts.
Each time it happens, exactly one body part remains in the voluntary control of my mind and helps to wake up other parts of the body. ( Once it was the lower jaw).

Lastly, towards the end of this surgery, I completely felt exactly only  the last two stitches even though I was under local anesthesia.

When I told about this to my parents at that time, may be they thought that I was trying to draw attention or boasting or whatever but was never heard seriously. Yesterday, one of my friend told me the term and I was shocked that yes, I know this and I have been though this condition.

Lucid Dreaming : A lucid dream is any dream during which the dreamer is aware that they are dreaming. During lucid dreaming, the dreamer may be able to exert some degree of control over the dream characters, narrative, and environment. [Wiki]

"I sleep too much." - Everyone tells me this.

While introspection, I found out that I am expert Lucid Dreamer and just to extent the pleasure of dreams I extend my sleep durations . The only target is to complete that particular thought sequence. I can even resume my dream after a 10 minutes break.

Are these 3 things connected? A question that will now always haunt me.
And the non scientific hypothesis about demons etc. can never win my trust. So what exactly is it???

Random Numbers

Random Numbers

Anyone who considers arithmetical methods of producing random digits is, of course, in a state of sin.  -John Von Neumann, 1951

A random number is a number generated by a process, whose outcome is unpredictable, and which cannot be subsequentially reliably reproduced. This definition works fine provided that one has some kind of a black box – such a black box is usually called a random number generator – that fulfills this task.

However, if one were to be given a number, it is simply impossible to verify whether it was produced by a random number generator or not. In order to study the randomness of the output of such a generator, it is hence absolutely essential to consider sequences of numbers.

Random Number Generator

A random-number generator is a computational or physical device designed to generate a sequence of numbers or symbols that can not be reasonably predicted better than by a random chance.

Various applications of randomness have led to the development of several different methods for generating random data, of which some have existed since ancient times, among their ranks are well known "classic" examples, including the rolling of dice, coin flipping as well as countless other techniques. Because of the mechanical nature of these techniques, generating large numbers of sufficiently random numbers (important in statistics) required a lot of work and/or time. Thus, results would sometimes be collected and distributed as random number tables.
Nowadays, after the advent of computational random-number generators, a growing number of government-run lotteries and lottery games have started using RNGs instead of more traditional drawing methods. RNGs are also used to determine the odds of modern slot machines.

Several computational methods for random-number generation exist. Many fall short of the goal of true randomness, although they may meet, with varying success, some of the statistical tests for randomness intended to measure how unpredictable their results are (that is, to what degree their patterns are discernible). However, carefully designed cryptographically secure computationally based methods of generating random numbers also exist, such as those based on the Yarrow algorithm, the Fortuna (PRNG), and others.

D.P. Singh : When we think about inspiration, what inspires us most are ordinary people who have done extraordinary things. We appreciate when someone has the ability and willingness to be selfless, creative, innovative, or just dares to be different. Major D.P. Singh was an army man whose life flipped after the Kargil war.

Major D.P. Singh is known as the India's blade runner. His gruelling efforts and the ability to convert adversity into liability has set new standards of bravery and endurance for people like us. Today, he holds the Limca record for being the first Indian to run a half marathon with the blade -- a feat that has earned him the epithet of India's Blade Runner.

On July 8th 1999, India was taking on Pakistan in the Kargil War. Major D.P. Singh fought bravely, but was severely injured by a mortar which was fired from the other side of the border. He was declared dead at the Army hospital, but another doctor saved him. Singh's legs were amputated in order to keep him alive. He did not let his disability affect him as he took up running and wanted to be a part of the Delhi Marathon in 2009. That was how long it took for Singh to recover from his injuries.

When he lost his leg, he took it as a challenge to rise above his disability because he couldn't get used to sympathetic glances he got from people and started with his training. The training schedule of Singh was gruelling. It took him close to two hours just to get ready and wear the prosthesis. So he used to wake up at 3am to run at 5 am. He initially hopped on his good leg and dragged the prosthetic leg. After months of practice, he was able to hop-run for about five kilometres. Major was happy with all the hard work he had invested in training. The amazing part about the run was that Singh improved his timing by 15 minutes in each attempt.

Singh got to know about the fibre blade prosthetic from South African blade runner Oscar Pistorius. He has entered the Limca book of records for being the first Indian to run a half marathon with a blade. He attributes his success to the discipline he received in the Indian army. His goal is to run a full marathon. "When I was injured, I received blood from countless people of different castes, creeds and states. With the blood of India running in my veins, I feel I can do everything ", he concludes.

Paresh Gupta : All things for an ordinary man are difficult before they are easy and so was for him! Against all odds, he strived to be at the top. Never letting anyone define his limits , this man, Mr. Paresh Gupta believes in living a life for oneself!

Although he wished to get Rs15,000 per month, he rejected 3 job offers offering 7lakhs each later just because his first take is that if a person has the zeal to do something different, he/she is going to rock sooner or later.

His experiments with success reveal that venture providing a suitable platform to finance students, a networking opportunity and a chance to interact with Industry experts who could provide right direction to their careers in the finance domain is closest to his heart. He has won national awards from Economic Times, IIM Ahmedabad as well. Even with his incredible story of ups and down, he is of the view that everyone has a story of his own.

At present having a dream to make the largest finance career advisory group ,this guy also proves to be a walking encyclopedia!

Rohit Raj : Half the people in any engineering college don't want to be there. Rohit Raj was one of them , in our very own college, in fact. But he gave it all up, dropped out and became India's youngest event manager. Sounds crazy? His journey is exactly that. Starting in one event management company subsequently founding his own, a chain of hotels with his father, social media startup, public speaking and his baby, as he calls it, starting a foundation for feeding the poor, his resume looks nothing like that of an average person. Living by the motto, we make a life by what we give, his foundation Sneh, aims to ensure that every single person in Haridwar is fed atleast one meal.

If Rohit has big ambitions, he certainly has the capabilities to realize them. He's a total people person, after being a part of various speaker sessions at multiple colleges he's formed amazing equations with the students he meets. Apart from his work, he describes himself as a total foodie as well as a travel enthusiast, travelling 1,10,000 kms in 2015 alone!

If Rohit has big ambitions, he certainly has the capabilities to realize them. After being a part of various speaker sessions at multiple colleges, he has formed amazing equations with the students he meets. Apart from his work, he describes himself as a total foodie as well as a travel enthusiast, travelling 1,10,000 kms in 2015 alone!

His story is inspiring,to say the least, but also attests to the fact that we can achieve everything we aspire for, even if it's not the the conventional path.

Shraddha Sharma : Social media has seen an astounding amount of talent reach out to an ever increasing audience that it so deserves. A shining example of this phenomenon is Shraddha Sharma, who has shaken YouTube ever since she first uploaded her first video back in 2011. 'Main Tainu Samjhavan Ki' was soon a rage and amassed tons of views. This motivated her to continue with the exhibition of her amazing singing skills and as of now, she has around 2 Lakh followers on YouTube.

Shraddha's mother is a music teacher who has trained her daughter since she was 9. Born after two sons, both of whom have now moved away from home, she is the centre of her parents' lives. A quick learner and a lover of music, her classmates and teachers saw at an early age the potential she had. Fast forward to 2016, her old-school guitar-and-the-vocalist videos scream of minimalism and poise that have constantly impressed her viewers.

Her debut album 'Raastey' rocked the charts when she debuted with it in 2014, and her vocal skills have kept on improving as time has passed. A simple, shy girl who has laid down her faith in the world of music is now a national reckoning and her career graph has only one way to go now- up!

Siddharth Slathia : Music comes naturally to some. Being a connoisseur of the harmony of music is easy, doing justice to this vast world is anything but. Some people however, are excelling at this very same task and Siddharth Slathia is one of them.

Growing up in Jammu, he started showing his panache for singing at an early age. At the age of 10, he was selected for singing for his school's annual day. He was given the required platforms to show his talent by his teachers, which led him to perform in the All India Radio and Jammu's local Radio channels as well. He also took part in a lot of state and national level singing competitions.

Siddharth started with his Engineering from a reputed college in Jaipur, but dropped out to pursue his music career, in which process he learned Hindustani classical from Pt. Kundan mal ji. As of now, he is pursuing a course in Bachelors of Music from Jammu University and learning Hindustani classical from Pt. Bholanath Misra ji.

A big lover of music, he feels that failure encourages him a lot. As an individual, he tries to pursue his job will full dedication and integrity and leaves the rest to the Almighty. His is the sort of soul that screams a music lover the moment you interact with him.

Night Owl

Night Owl

Wikipedia:
" A night owl, evening person or simply owl, is a person who tends to stay up until late at night. "

Tired in the morning and awake at night!

Often my most productive hours are between midnight and 2 or 3AM, even if I’ve gotten only a few hours sleep the night before and been up for 18 hours.

It’s truly a bizarre pattern of dead tired mornings, walking around like a jet-lagged zombie, followed by a tortuous afternoon in desperate need of a nap, and finally an evening where I start to wake up.

“What could be wrong with me?” I wondered for years. Surely this was not a normal way to live!

As it turns out, I’m not alone with this small problem. Like others, I eventually managed to deal with it (taking only afternoon classes while in college, and starting my own business to set my own hours). But it always bothered me because everyone I met didn’t seem to understand my problem.

I tried every piece of advice that I heard: “Read before bed”, “Drink a glass of warm milk”, “No caffeine after noon”, but it didn’t seem to work. I even spoke to several doctors about it who didn’t have any good answers. Even if I forced myself to get in bed at a reasonable hour, sure enough, I would toss and turn until 3AM before finally falling asleep.

If this sounds like a problem you have, then I’m here to help, because you may have something called “Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome”.

It’s a well documented sleep disorder that goes undiagnosed (or misdiagnosed) by the vast majority of doctors today. You can read more about it in this excellent article

As you may recall, everyone has a biological clock, known as a circadian rhythm, that regulates when we are awake and when we feel tired. People with delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS for short) tend to have:

A shifted circadian rhythm
A longer than normal circadian rhythm
The second one in particular is difficult to live with because it causes you to operate on a 25 (or more) hour day. Each morning you want to sleep in a bit later, and each night you want to stay up a bit later. The world is moving too fast for your biological clock, so you are always a bit behind!

After trying everything under the sun to correct this efficiency problem in my life (since it was certainly affecting my productivity), I finally stumbled upon light therapy. It sounds bizarre, but you can actually use light to reset your biological clock. In particular, certain wave lengths of light seem to work better than others.

Thinking back to the caveman days, life was very simple getting plenty of sunlight during the day and it being pitch black at night. Our brains evolved to operated on this schedule over millions of years, but with today’s society full of artificial lights and plenty of activities to stay up for, some of our brains (mine included) have gotten confused.

Simply getting some sunlight early in the morning can help reset your biological clock, but for those who are in an office building, there are some simple light therapy devices that can help reset your biological clock. One that I’ve used and would recommend is the Apollo GoLite.

I use this for about 30 minutes each morning, shining some blue wavelength light on myself, and after about the first week of using it my entire sleep cycle had been reset. Getting up a regular hour no longer felt like I had just been awoken in the middle of the night! It was truly remarkable because after years of struggling with this problem, I finally found something that worked.

So stop trying to drink ten cups of coffee each morning, setting two alarms, and sneaking off to your car during your lunch hour to catch a nap! You might just have delayed sleep phase syndrome, and you can do something about it with light therapy!
